No. 38 Lions Defeat No. 55 Michigan State 5-2

Lions register second win in a row against a ranked team; Jennifer Kerr, Akanksha Bhan, Melissa Sakar, and Clarine Lerby win singles matches.
EAST LANSING, Mich.—The No. 38 ranked Columbia Women's Tennis team won its second consecutive match against a nationally ranked team as it won a 5-2 decision over No. 55 Michigan State Saturday at the MSU Tennis Center. With the win, Columbia improves to 10-3 on the year, while Michigan State falls to 8-3 overall.
Columbia plays its fourth consecutive match against a nationally ranked opponent when it plays at No. 32 Michigan (5-4) on Sunday in Ann Arbor. First-serve is at noon.
Columbia took a quick 1-0 lead as it claimed the doubles point. Anna Zhang and Winta Tewolde claimed a 6-1 decision over Michigan State's Lauren Lemonds and Tia Mukherjee at No. 3 doubles, then Akanksha Bhan and Melissa Sakar claimed a 6-4 win over MSU's Nicole Stephens and Asyshe Can to clinch the point. MSU's Mary Lewis and Maja Pietrowicz defeated Columbia's Rachele Rimondini and Shivani Amineni 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Michigan State tied the match at 1-1 when Lauren Lemonds defeated Columbia's Shivani Amineni 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, but the Lions responded with three straight singles wins to take the match. Jennifer Kerr won a 6-3, 6-4 decision over MSU's Nicole Stephens at No. 2, No. 121 ranked Akanksha Bhan claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over MSU's Mary Lewis, then Melissa Sakar clinched the match at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over MSU's Maja Pietrowicz.
The Lions split the final two matches as MSU's Ayshe Can won a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over Columbia's Julia Haynes and Clariine Lerby took a 6-4, 2-6, 3-2 (7-5) win over MSU's Charlotte Gisclon.
Michigan has three players ranked among the nation's top singles players: Jaedan Brown (17-10), who is ranked No. 61, Andrea Cerdan (15-7), who is ranked No. 76, and Nicole Hammond (16-6), who ranks as the No. 93 singles player
