PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The No. 7 ranked Columbia Lightweights took second place in two of the three races in the Dodge Cup and the No. 17 ranked Columbia Heavyweights competed in three Blackwell Cup races Saturday at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Both Lions squads competed in a three-way regatta against host Penn and Yale.
In the lightweight portion of the Dodge Cup, Columbia registered a pair of second place finishes in the First Varsity 8 (6:30.2) and Second Varsity 8 (6:34.0). The Lions took third place in the Third Varsity 8 race. In the First Varsity 8, Columbia finished six second behind Yale and nine seconds ahead of Penn.
In the heavyweight portion of the Blackwell Cup, No. 1 ranked Yale won all three races. In the First Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races, Columbia battled back from a deficit and closed the gap against Penn but ran out of water and finished in third place.

Scott Alwin said a very strong headwind created bumpy water and a slow race course.
"Our crews got better at racing today despite the result and the conditions," Alwin said. "We just doubled our 2,000-meter race experience for the spring. Now we have raced twice in the last 150 weeks. And it is great to be back to racing after being on hold this week due to Covid protocols. We look forward to a normal week of practice and racing next week.
Next up for the Heavyweights is a three-way regatta next Saturday against Temple, Holy Cross, and Marist. The Lightweights are off next week.
