Columbia Women compete in annual Connell Cup, Lightweights win four of eight races in 15-team, 26-race, one-day regatta Saturday at Overpeck Park.
LEONIA, N.J.—Columbia's Lightweight program won four races and either finished in first or second place in all eight of its races as the Lions hosted the largest collection of lightweight rowing programs in any collegiate regatta this year at Saturday's National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational contested at Overpeck Park. Final results are posted at this link.
The No. 6 ranked Columbia Lightweight Rowing and Columbia Women's teams both made their home debut in the 26-race, 15-team regatta, which marks the first rowing event that Columbia has hosted in some time. A total of 15 rowing teams competed at the event, including 11 lightweight teams and four women's programs. Lightweight programs included California, host Columbia, Delaware, Florida Tech, Georgetown, Harvard, Iona, MIT, Mercyhurst, Penn, and Princeton, while the four women's teams included Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, and Yale, which competed in the annual Connell Cup.
"This was our first time racing since 2019," said Columbia Lightweight Head Coach Nich Lee Parker. "We had a lot of learning happening out on the race court, a lot of first-race jitters. I think we got a sense of where we are and where our competitors are. There is still a lot more to go this season. I was pleased with the wins and I think we had a couple other races that could've gone our way with a different race strategy. We'll work on it and we'll keep improving."
Overall, the Lightweights won four races as the Third Varsity 8 led the way with wins in both of its challenges. Other wins included the Second Varsity 8 in Flight Two and 4+ in Flight 3. In races that the Lions finished second, three of those were by two seconds or less.
Princeton edged the Columbia Varsity 8 by less than one second for the Campbell Cup. The annual challenge, which began in 2017, is named after Columbia alum, the late William V. Campbell '67. The cup honors Campbell for his lifetime commitment to Columbia University and its athletics program.
In the Wales-Kirrane Cup, Columbia competed against only Georgetown as Harvard did not participate.
Yale captured the annual Connell Cup women's competition which included five events and four teams—Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, and Yale. The Connell Cup was first contested in 1975 between Penn and Yale, and Columbia joined later in 1994. This year, Dartmouth joined the Ivy League trio as a guest.
It was the second regatta of the year for the Columbia women as they registered two second place finishes, two third places, and a fourth place.
Up next for the Lightweights is races vs. Navy and Dartmouth next Saturday at Overpeck Park, while the women host Northeastern and Navy also on Saturday at Overpeck Park.
