Seven home matches, four 2021 NCAA Tournament opponents highlight 16-game slate
NEW YORK — The Columbia men's soccer team and head coach Kevin Anderson announced the program's 2022 fall schedule on Friday. The Lions open the season September 2 on the road, before hosting their home opener against Stony Brook on Tuesday, September 6, at 7 p.m. ET.
New this season, the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved changes to overtime rules in men's and women's soccer for both the regular season and the postseason. For the regular season, overtime has been eliminated, meaning if a game is tied after the regulation 90 minutes, it will end in a tie. In conference tournaments and NCAA postseason games, the sudden-victory component has been eliminated, and teams will play two 10-minute overtime periods instead. If the game remains tied, a penalty-kick shootout will be held to determine the winner.
Columbia returns 17 players from the 2021 season, including 15 with starting lineup experience. Of the 15 starters, six of them started 10 or more matches last year – those players include senior defender Max Gonzalez (14), senior goalkeeper Michael Collodi (14), junior defender Matthew Leong (13), sophomore forward Ryan Kipness (12), senior defender Keenan Foley (12) and junior defender/midfielder David Walley (11). Collodi is coming off a 2021 season in which he was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League, averaging 5.33 saves per game to rank No. 1 in the Ivies and No. 9 in the NCAA.
The 2022 season opener takes place in the nation's capital as the Lions will look for repeated success against George Washington. Columbia defeated GW, 2-0, in last year's season opener in New York with goals by Jake Novoshelski and Ryan Kipness.
Four days after the season opener, Columbia will welcome back its home crowd to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium to take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook. The Tuesday night game kicks off at 7 p.m. The week concludes with a Friday night match less than two miles from the Baker Athletics Complex at Manhattan College. The two sides played to an entertaining, 2-2, draw last season on Columbia's home turf.
Four teams that qualified for the 2021 NCAA Tournament are featured on this year's schedule. Columbia will host two of them in back-to-back matches, beginning with a St. John's team that won 11 games last season and defeated Princeton, 1-0, in the first round of NCAAs. The match against the Red Storm is set for Monday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. ET. Later that week, the Lions host 2021 NEC regular season and tournament champions Long Island University. The Sharks won 12 games a year ago, including a, 1-0, victory over perennial national powerhouse Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. First kick on Saturday, September 17, is set for 4 p.m.
Road contests at Drexel (Sept. 20) and Iona (Sept. 24) will serve as Columbia's final tune-up before the start of Ivy League play. The Lions open the seven-game Ivy slate at home on Saturday, October 1, hosting Brown at 7 p.m. Columbia will play three Ivy matches at home this season.
A tough midweek home match against 2021 CAA regular season and tournament champion Hofstra is set for Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. The Pride went 18-2-2 last year, defeating Lipscomb and No. 12 Penn State in the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16. They finished the year with a No. 13 final ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.
After a trip to Harvard that Saturday, Oct. 8, Columbia will host reigning Ivy champion Princeton the following Saturday, Oct. 15. The match will serve as the front end of a Columbia soccer doubleheader at Commisso Soccer Stadium, with the women's team set to take on the Tigers at 6 p.m.
Four of Columbia's final five matches will take place on the road. Trips to Dartmouth (Oct. 22) and La Salle (Oct. 25) set the table for Columbia men's soccer Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Lions will take on Yale that night at 7 p.m.
The regular season concludes with back-to-back Saturdays on the road at Penn (Nov. 5) and Cornell (Nov. 12). The regular season finale in Ithaca will kick at 4 p.m. The 2021 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament is set to begin the following weekend.
