OLD BETHPAGE, N.Y. and BERLIN, Conn. — The Columbia men's golf team completed its first weekend of fall competition on Sunday. The weekend was highlighted by
Wyatt McGovern finishing tied for fifth at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate, and
Nathan Han finishing tied for eighth at The Doc Gimmler Invitational.
Competing as an individual, McGovern followed up his opening-round 3-under-par 68 with a final round 2-under 69 on Sunday at Shuttle Meadow Country Club. The sophomore posted four birdies and two bogeys on Sunday and combined for nine birdies on the weekend, posting a career-low, 36-hole score of 5-under-par 137.
"Wyatt is a known and proven player for us. He started many events last year, including the Ivy Championship, so it doesn't surprise me to see him deliver in a competitive situation," Director of Golf
Rich Mueller said. "He has done this for us in the past and I expect him to continue to get better and better as his career progresses."
Han was one of five Lions competing in The Doc Gimmler team event at Bethpage Red. The junior entered Sunday at 8 under par and finished off a solid weekend performance with an even-par 70 on Sunday. After bogeying two of his first three holes, Han recovered with back-to-back birdies at the par-3 fourth and par-5 fifth to make the turn at even. A birdie on 13 coupled with a bogey on 15 brought Han in with a tournament total of 8-under-par 202. Han finished eighth in the 86-man field.
Columbia would finish tied for fifth out of 15 teams with a final score of 8 under par. The Lions were 5-under as a team on Sunday, led by
Pat Healy's 3-under 67 and
DJ Francey's 2-under 68. Healy was on fire to start his final round, birdieing three consecutive holes on the front to make the turn at 4-under 31 and posting a fifth birdie at the par-4 11th. Back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 brought him back to 3 under and earned him a spot in the top 20. Francey also had five birdies on the day while
Alvin Kwak matched Han with a final-round 70. Four of the five Lions competing in the team event shot even par or better on Sunday.
"I thanked Pat and DJ for their leadership today," Mueller added. "To have your two captains step up like this is the type of leadership that we aspire to have.
"I also thought Alvin's round was very solid — two bogeys, two birdies, other than that 14 pars. This is a journey and just because we finished tied for fifth doesn't mean we didn't play well. We still shot 8-under for three rounds. Overall, we did a very good job. There are some small things to touch up but we're going to be fine."
The Lions continue their fall slate next weekend at the Cornell Invitational. The 36-hole tournament will be hosted at The 1912 Club in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania.
