Han, Sung Highlight Lions at Cornell/Temple Invite

Han rallies for top-10 finish

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — The Columbia men's golf team turned in another solid performance this weekend to finish fourth at the Cornell/Temple Invitational. The 36-hole event concluded Sunday at The 1912 Club.

"The course played incredibly difficult — the greens were very fast and no team finished under par — so It was a good performance," Director of Golf Rich Mueller said. "We left some shots out there, but there are so many good takeaways from the event. Much of the strategy that we employed really worked and I'm proud of the way the guys played. That being said, there's definitely a little bit of work to do, but the team is in a good place."

For a second-straight weekend, Columbia was led in the team event by Nathan Han. The junior out of Somers, New York turned in a 1-over 71 for the second day in a row, earning his second top-10 finish in as many events this fall. He had to rally on the back nine to do so, sitting at 3-over on his round through 12 holes before birdieing 13, 15 and 16 to pull back to even. A bogey-par finish on 17 and 18 brought Han in with a tournament total of 2-over 142, which tied for ninth.

DJ Francey and Pat Healy were also steady in the team portion. Francey had four birdies, four bogeys and a double at the par-4 eighth to card back-to-back rounds of 72 and finish at 4 over par. Healy birdied two holes, bogeyed three and added a double at the long par-3 16th to shoot 3-over on his round and match Francey at 4-over for the tournament. The pair of Lions tied for 17th.

William Sung and Darren Pang performed well as individuals. Sung, a sophomore, followed yesterday's 1-over 71 with a final-round 2-over 72, completing his weekend tied for 12th at 3 over par. Like Han, Sung rallied late, playing his final six holes in 2-under with birdies at 13 and 15. Pang, a first-year competing in his first collegiate event, earned a top-25 finish at 5-over-par 145. He carded a 72 on Sunday with birdies at the par-5 third, par-4, 294-yard 13th and par-4 15th.

"I thought William had a really nice strategy all weekend," Mueller added. "His short game is impeccable. He putted well this week on a difficult golf course. He just missed qualifying this week and I'm happy for him that he got in there and put up a great performance. I was also happy with Darren, shooting right around par both days in his first competition."

The Lions have next weekend off before they host the Columbia Autumn Invitational, which takes place October 1-2 at the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, New York.
