Han (-13) breaks 54-hole scoring record
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — The Columbia men's golf team rallied to overtake Sacred Heart and win the Columbia Autumn Invitational at Lake Placid Club. The final round of the 54-hole tournament was contested Sunday on the Links Course.
In winning the tournament, Columbia tied the program's 54-hole scoring record in relation to par (-10) -- the Lions' previous 10-under total came at the 2016 Desert Shootout in Arizona. They had to come from behind to do so on Sunday, entering five shots back of Sacred Heart after Saturday's first two rounds. Led by a pair of 1-under 70s by Nathan Han and DJ Francey, Columbia overcame the Pioneers by a single stroke to post a winning total of 10-under-par 842 (265-288-289).
In addition to the team record, Nathan Han completed his record-setting weekend with a tournament total of 13-under-par 200. He finished runner-up to Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim (-14), but Han's 54-hole score stands alone as the lowest in relation to par in program history and matches Brandon Jowers for the lowest 54-hole total.
"Yesterday was pretty special," said Han, who became the 17th recorded player in NCAA history to post a round of 60 on Saturday. "Honestly, all day I just stuck to my game plan and then got a few good breaks here and there. I started making a couple of birdies, and they just kept going in. My game plan stayed the same and it was cool to experience the feeling of chasing the magic number coming down the stretch."
The tournament was the first Columbia has ever hosted at Lake Placid Club. A total of 10 teams and 60 players competed in the event.
"I'm really grateful, honored and humbled to have been able to host this tournament at Lake Placid," Columbia's Director of Golf Rich Mueller said. "I'm also grateful for the teams that made the journey up. The golf course was in great shape and it was nice of them to open up their doors to college golf.
"We had talked earlier in the week about taking a step forward this week as a team and the guys responded. I didn't realize that would mean setting all of these scoring records but, clearly, the guys were motivated and excited, We had put up solid performances in our first two tournaments but I knew there was a lot left out there. They certainly brought it this weekend."
In addition to Han's second-place finish, DJ Francey posted a top-10 at 1-under-par 212. Wyatt McGovern (+3) tied for 17th and Pat Healy (+5) earned a top 25. Competing as an individual, senior Alvin Kwak was impressive and carded a final-round 67 to tie Francey for seventh at 1-under for the tournament.
Columbia will continue its fall slate next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, when it takes part in the Georgetown Intercollegiate at Liberty National Golf Club.
