5 THINGS TO KNOW:
#1 | HOME SWEET HOME
Since the start of the 2013 season, the Lions are an unbeaten 7-0-1 in home openers. That mark includes six straight wins from 2013-18. Last year, Columbia defeated George Washington, 2-0, in its home debut with a goal and an assist apiece from Ryan Kipness and Jake Novoshelski. The last time the Lions were defeated in a home opener was August 31, 2012, falling to Fairfield, 1-0. #2 | 2022 MAKEUP
This year's team features five seniors, nine juniors, four sophomores and nine first-year players. Of the 27 that make up the roster, 11 are new to the team, including all nine first-years, junior Evan Kim and senior Nicolas Jandeleit. Columbia returns 75 percent of its goal scoring, 64 percent of its total assists and 68 percent of its accumulated points from the 2021 season. Those returners include last year's leading goal scorers, Will DeNight and Jake Novoshelski.
#3 | LAST TIME OUT
Columbia opened the season on Friday at George Washington and scored first with a 37th-minute goal from Jack Muoio. The goal came on a perfectly placed header after a corner kick sent in by Will DeNight and marked the first goal of the junior's collegiate career. However, GW would answer 11 seconds before halftime and later took the lead off a free kick near the box in the 78th minute. Columbia outshot the home side, 14-9, with each team putting three shots on goal. Head coach Kevin Anderson summarized the performance by saying, "I thought we played well in moments but still have some growing to do." #4 | DEBUT LIONS
Eight Lions made their collegiate debuts in Friday's season opener — Ryan Yang, Brandon Newman, Ben Sidley, Alessandro Franciosa, Carmine Falco, Cy Sokolowski, Joao Lima and Jesse Greissman. Yang, Newman, Sidley and Franciosa appeared in the Starting XI, with Yang taking his first collegiate shot and shot on goal. Sokolowski and Falco also tallied their first shots off the bench.
#5 | SEAWOLVES SERIES
Columbia and Stony Brook have gone head-to-head seven times in a series that dates back to 1990. Columbia won the first four matchups between the two programs from 1990-2005. Stony Brook earned its first series victory in 2007 and has gone on to win the last three. Last year, the Seawolves were victorious out on Long Island, 1-0, courtesy of a penalty kick goal in the 45th minute.
