The Lions are set to take on their Ivy League foe on Friday afternoon at Uris Natatorium
NEW YORK — After a month off from competition for the holidays, the Columbia women's swimming and diving team is back in action on Friday, hosting the Brown Bears for an Ivy League clash at Uris Natatorium scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions will look to build upon their 1-2 record in 2022 heading into Friday's meet by riding the momentum of a dominant performance last time out at the ECAC Winter Championships. The women came in first place in the competition, totaling 2019 points to defeat the likes of UMBC, Wagner, Sienna, Marist, LIU, and many more competitors.
Multiple Columbia student-athletes had career performances at ECACs, including Emily MacDonald who shattered a school record in the 50-free, taking first place in the event with a time of 22.66. Aziza Ganihanova set multiple ECAC records over the weekend, all the while also setting a new program record in the 200-back with an impressive time of 1:57.35.
In all, the Lions shattered upwards of double-digit ECAC records in East Meadow, including a record-setting performance by Olivia Jubin in the mile swim. The senior took first place in the event, shattering the ECAC record with a time of 16:35.78. This was also the second-highest mark in Columbia history.
SCOUTING BROWN
The Bears come into Friday's clash with a 2-3 record so far this season. Brown owns wins over Dartmouth and Penn, and defeats at the hands of Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.
Similar to the Lions, the Bears are also coming in hot on Friday thanks to a first place finish in a dual-meet last time out. Brown fended off NYU and New Hampshire at the Bruno Invite in early December thanks to some big performances. Elena Yeh set a program record on the diving boards with her performance on the 3-meter. She finished the event with 314.70 points, more than six points higher than the previous Brown record. In addition, Brown won nearly every swimming event over the course of the three days, highlighted by a record-breaking performance from Sumner Chmielewski in the 400-IM.
Last season, the Bears finished the regular season with a 3-4 overall record, and finished in fifth place at the Ivy League Championships, just ahead of Columbia. In their individual matchup last season, Brown defeated the Lions, 191-96.
ON DECK
The Lions will have a quick turnaround following Friday's competition, as the team will hit the road once again for a trip to Ithaca, New York, to take on Ivy League foe Cornell on Sunday, January 15. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
