Lions tie for seventh after rain canceled Saturday’s first two rounds
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Columbia women's golf team was able to squeeze one round in this weekend at the Yale Invitational. The Lions tied for seventh in what turned into an 18-hole shootout at Yale Golf Course.
Persistent rain throughout Saturday wound up canceling the tournament's first two rounds. The 12 teams were able to get the final round in on Sunday. Columbia carded a team score of 16-over-par 304, tying for seventh with Arkansas-Little Rock.
Senior Allison Paik led Columbia with a 2-over-par 74. She birdied the par-4, 365-yard seventh and 343-yard 12th, finishing in a tie for eighth individually and earning her fourth career top 10. Meanwhile, junior Angela Zhang tied for 15th with a 3-over 75.
"It was good to have two players in the top 15 against a league field," head coach Amy Weeks said. "That's certainly positive to see. The team had to play a golf course that requires a tremendous amount of attention to detail, aiming at sightlines into some tiered and extremely large greens.
"Not being able to play a practice round and losing all of Saturday was rough. We only have two players that have played this course before. It makes it tough to evaluate and tough to judge momentum throughout a tournament. That being said, I was happy we were able to get out and play today."
Yoko Tai (77) and Emma Shen (78) carded rounds in the 70s to help out in the team competition. First-year Ava Zeng led the three Lions competing as individuals with a 79.
The Lions have three weeks to gear up for their final fall tournament. They'll be taking on the field at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational, Oct. 21-22, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Rehoboth, Delaware.
