Lions held a 1-0 lead heading into the final frame
BOSTON — Columbia field hockey allowed two goals in the final 10 minutes of Sunday afternoon's match and fell 2-1 at Boston University at New Balance Field.
Mckenzie Bloom netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter to open the scoring and give the Lions (3-9, 0-4) a 1-0 lead. Lindsey Yu sent in a shot off a penalty corner that was deflected to Delfina Gonzalez Lobo, who fed Maya Walker for a backhand shot towards the cage that Bloom tipped in.
The Lions made a bid to double their lead in the final seconds of the third quarter on their eighth penalty corner of the day. Anabelle Brodeur got a shot off but it was kept out at the near post as time expired.
BU (7-5, 2-1) tied the game at 1-1 with 9:17 left in the fourth quarter off a corner. Payton Anderson fired a shot from the top of the circle into the cage off the feed from Megan Wetzel and Thalia Steenssens.
The Terriers then took the lead with 4:37 to go. Nicole Lauro scored her first goal of the season on a high deflection to make it 2-1 BU. Steenssens picked up her second assist of the afternoon on the goal.
Columbia logged both of its first quarter shots on goal late in the frame. Brodeur and Walker each threatened with a scoring chance 11 seconds apart but couldn't get it past Terriers goalkeeper Kate Thomason. Boston only had one opportunity on goal in the scoreless opening period.
Thomason finished with seven saves on 10 shots faced as BU notched its fourth straight one-goal victory. Columbia starting goalkeeper Katie Wimmer returned to the lineup after missing Friday's match at No. 13 Harvard and made five saves.
