Two Lions earn top-20s in the 105-player field
HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Senior Christine Shao carded rounds of 77 and 78 to earn a tie for 11th and lead the Columbia women's golf team at the Low Country Intercollegiate. The weather-shortened tournament wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Moss Creek Golf Club.
Shao followed up Friday's 5-over 77 with a final round 6-over-par 78. After a 4-over start through four holes, the senior from Green Brook, New Jersey settled in with pars at the fifth and sixth before birdieing the par-3 seventh. It was part of a 1-under-par six-hole stretch for Shao, who posted six pars and three bogeys on the back nine.
Moss Creek Golf Club was playing extremely difficult for the 19-team, 105-player field all weekend long. Friday's average round was more than 11 shots over par. After the weather wiped away Saturday's second round, Sunday's final round wasn't much easier, playing at more than 9 over.
Shao steadied the course with 23 pars, which tied for the fourth-most in the field. She was also one of the best players in the field on the par-3s and the par-5s, ranking tied for eighth in par-3 scoring and tied for 12th in par-5 scoring. Emma Shen matched Shao on the par-3s at even-par. Shen finished tied for 17th with rounds of 77 and 81.
The Lions (+59) finished sixth out of 19 teams, just two shots behind a two-way tie for fourth between Jacksonville and Presbyterian. Quinnipiac (+43) won the tournament by a single shot over UNC Asheville (+44).Congrats to our top finisher at the Low Country Intercollegiate, Christine Shao!
