Baseball, softball, lightweight rowing, men's and women's tennis, men's golf, and archery in action

NEW YORK  This week's edition of Lions on the Road features the third week of baseball and softball, men's and women's tennis, lightweight rowing's first race of the spring, men's golf, and archery.

SOFTBALL
Softball heads to California for spring break to play seven games. The Lions will play a doubleheader against Boston and No. 20 Baylor on Friday in Long Beach, California. The team will play in Fullerton, California on Saturday and Sunday. The Lions play Colgate and San Diego State in a Saturday doubleheader before facing South Dakota on Sunday. Columbia wraps up the trip with a doubleheader at California Riverside on Tuesday. The Lions are 2-7 to start the season. Bubba Gleaves, Jaden Hill and Megan Ryono all have 11 hits through the first nine games and have played a critical role in the Columbia offense. Jordan Hill and Sarah Mikami each have one win in the circle this season.

BASEBALL
Columbia (2-5, 0-0) heads to Tuscaloosa to begin its spring break trip with a three-game series at No. 18 Alabama (14-0, 0-0). Following the series with the Crimson Tide, the Lions play at Troy (11-2, 0-0) on Tuesday and at Samford (6-6, 0-0) on Wednesday. Andy Leon, JD Ogden, and Joe Sheets are the scheduled starting pitchers this weekend. Seth Dardar was named Ivy League Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Dardar started at third base in all four games of Columbia's series split with UNC Wilmington last weekend, going 9-for-16 with five extra-base hits, including his first career home run. The junior from Mandeville, Louisiana, also had seven RBIs and scored five runs in the series. Leon was named to the Honor Roll after tossing six innings and allowing just three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in Columbia's 15-0 win last Friday. Through seven games, Hayden Schott leads the team in batting average (.414), runs (8), hits (12), home runs (3), and RBIs (8). Through two starts on the mound, Leon has an ERA of 0.90 while Sheets has an ERA of 2.00.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Women's Tennis will head to Florida for spring break. The Lions will face No. 35 Florida International on Monday in Miami. The Lions are winners of three-straight after defeating Binghamton in a 5-0 sweep Sunday.

MEN'S TENNIS
Men's Tennis will play several matches in California during spring break. The Lions will start the trip with a match at Santa Clara on Saturday. Columbia will then play at No. 27 California on Monday and No. 38 Pepperdine on Wednesday. Columbia is 7-1 this season coming off a 4-0 sweep of No. 12 Northwestern last Friday.

Lightweight Rowing
MEN'S LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING
The Lions begin the spring 2023 season looking to defend its national title with two races at Drexel. Columbia's second race on the schedule is set for March 25 against Bates at Overpeck Park. Then the Lions race at the National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational on Saturday, April 1, at West Windsor. Columbia also takes on Navy on April 8 for the WIT Cup, Yale and Penn on April 15 for the Dodge Cup, and Cornell on April 23 for the Geiger Cup. Then the Lions compete in the EARC Sprints on May 14 followed by the IRA National Championships June 2-4.

MEN'S GOLF
Coming off a tournament victory in February, the Columbia men's golf team will look for its third title of the 2022-23 academic year on Monday and Tuesday at the GCU Invitational. The tournament will be hosted by Grand Canyon University at its home GCU Golf Course. Nathan Han leads the Lions with a 69.00 stroke average through the fall and spring and is coming off a third-place showing at The Savannah Intercollegiate. Wyatt McGovern (-3) and DJ Francey (-2) also took top-fives to help the Lions win the title.

ARCHERY
The archery team will head to Merida, Mexico for its annual Spring Break Trip, which serves as a training trip for the Lions to prepare for the outdoor season. Head coach Derek Davis' Lions competed at USA Archery Indoor Nationals just a couple of weeks ago. The performance was highlighted by gold medals in the regional competition by first-year Lillian Han (recurve) and senior Sachiko Keane (compound). The Lions also swept the podium on the regional level. The team's trip runs Monday, March 13 through Saturday, March 18. Their first outdoor competition is scheduled for April 8.
