Lions score in fourth quarter but come up short
PRINCETON, N.J. — Columbia field hockey battled with Princeton but dropped its first Ivy League road match of the season, 2-1, on Friday at Bedford Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth quarter, Columbia (2-5, 0-2) stayed persistent and found the back of the net with just under 10 minutes remaining to tie the match. Mckenzie Bloom fired one into the cage past Princeton goalkeeper Robyn Thompson for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The goal started on a Jeannine Turgeon pass into the circle that Anabelle Brodeur deflected perfectly to Bloom's stick for the finish.
The Tigers (3-4, 1-0) would re-take the lead with just over three minutes left in regulation on a deflected shot that went by Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer. Ava Dempsey was credited with her first goal of the season and Talia Schenck recorded the assist.
Princeton took an early 1-0 lead when Schenck scored nearly six minutes into the match.
Wimmer kept Columbia in yet another match, tying her season-high with nine saves for the third time this season. Princeton had 14 penalty corner opportunities compared to Columbia's four.
The Tigers also outshot the Lions, 22-5 (11-3 on goal). Besides Bloom's shot that went in the cage, Maya Walker and Madison Kim recorded the other two shots on goal for Columbia. Captain Lindsey Yu added two shots that didn't fall on goal.
