Field Hockey Blanks Rider at Home Sunday
9/24/2023 3:37:00 PM | Field Hockey
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey shutout Rider, 1-0, on a rainy and windy Sunday afternoon at Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
Captain Lindsey Yu netted the lone goal of the game off a penalty corner with 1:34 left in the first quarter to put the Lions (3-5, 0-2) in front. Maya Walker and Anabelle Brodeur were each credited with an assist.
"We had a lot of good quick passing to get around Rider," Yu said. "We held possession really well throughout which allowed us to control the game overall."
It was Yu's fourth goal of the season, which ties for the team lead with Mckenzie Bloom. The goal also served as Yu's second game-winning goal of the season. Yu leads the Lions with 11 points through eight games in 2023.
Columbia goalkeeper Katie Wimmer made three saves in her second career shutout on Sunday. The Lions defense successfully defended six Rider penalty corners and held the Broncs (2-6) to just eight shots (three on goal).
"It feels amazing to have a shutout at home," Wimmer said. "I have been so fortunate to play with such an incredible defense this season, they were the reason a shutout was possible today."
The Lions have now won three one-goal matches in a row against Rider and lead the all-time series, 6-4.
