Columbia checks in at No. 22 in the national poll
NEW YORK – Columbia checked in at No. 22 in the Top Drawer Soccer national rankings after a 1-0 win against Penn on Saturday to improve to 7-1-1 overall this season.
This is the first time Columbia has earned recognition in a national poll since 2008 when the team received votes in the NSCAA national poll, now known as the United Soccer Coaches rankings. Columbia also received votes several times during the 2006 season as the team captured its first Ivy League title.
Columbia tied a program record with its sixth consecutive shutout in Saturday's win over Penn. The Lions also extended their win streak to five games and began the Ivy League season 1-0.
The Lions also came in at No. 22 in the most recent NCAA women's soccer RPI ratings. Columbia continues to lead the nation in goals against average (.111), shutout percentage (.889) and save percentage (.971) as the Lions have allowed just one goal all season in a loss to then-No. 8 Santa Clara.
Columbia moved to No. 7 in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region rankings after moving up the No. 6 spot last week. Columbia ranks third among Ivy League members in the region rankings after No. 2 Princeton and No. 6 Brown.
Columbia returns to the field this Saturday to host Harvard in another Ivy League battle. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
