Archery, squash, men's tennis, fencing, and track and field in action
NEW YORK — Columbia archery, squash, men's tennis, fencing and track and field are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
ARCHERY
The archery team competes in its second event of the season this Thursday-Sunday, taking part in The Vegas Shoot at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. With over 4,000 archers, The Vegas Shoot is the largest indoor tournament in the world. The Lions will be sending Giselle DeSousa (compound), Lillian Han (recurve), Judith Gottlieb (recurve), Michelle Ahn (recurve), Eunice Choi (recurve) and Emily Rosenfeld (recurve). Columbia's top three recurve scores will also be combined and compared to other collegiate shooters in the team event. Fans can keep track of the action live on ianseo.net.
TRACK AND FIELD
Columbia's indoor track & field season continues this weekend, as the Lions compete at the METS Indoor Championships at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. Last weekend, the Lions hosted the annual Dr. Sander Columbia Invitational at the Armory which featured many great performances. Justin O'Toole and Phoebe Anderson both had a big weekend, each breaking a Columbia record. Anderson set a new record in the women's mile run with a time of 4:35.89, which was also the seventh fastest time in the history of the Ivy League. O'Toole broke the Columbia men's 800m record with a time of 1:48.31 which was also the eighth fastest time in the history of the Ivy League. The Lions will look to keep rolling on Friday.
MEN'S & WOMEN'S SQUASH
The Columbia squash teams hit the road for the final time during the regular season this weekend for matches at Dartmouth and Harvard. The 7th-ranked men's team will face No. 10 Dartmouth on Saturday before finishing the weekend against No. 4 Harvard Sunday. The men are coming off a pair of close losses at home last weekend to No. 5 Yale and No. 1 Trinity. Columbia had a chance to win both matches, but came up short to fall to 4-5 overall this season.
On the women's side, Columbia is ranked No. 12 heading into the weekend with matches against No. 9 Dartmouth and No. 3 Harvard. The women are 2-7 overall this season after also losing both matches last weekend at home. The women fell to No. 7 Yale and No. 1 Trinity.
FENCING
Fencing has one final tuneup before hosting the Ivy League Championships when it faces three opponents at the Brian Palestis Memorial, hosted by Wagner. The Lions will take on the Seahawks, Lafayette and Drew in three dual matches.
Both squads enter the weekend as the top-rated in the country, according to the United States Fencing Coaches Associaton's SPI ratings. The men sit at 25-3 and the women are 26-3 on the season.
MEN'S TENNIS
The 9th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team will travel to North Carolina for a pair of road matches this weekend. The trip will begin with a match at No. 13 Wake Forest on Friday at 5 p.m. before finishing the weekend at NC State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lions are 3-0 on the season after defeating Fairfield twice last weekend in a doubleheader. Friday's match at Wake Forest will be the first dual match on the road this season.
Columbia cracked the Top 10 in this week's ITA Rankings with the No. 9 spot. The Lions started the season ranked No. 12 before defeating then-No. 13 North Carolina, 6-1. Following the win, Columbia moved up to No. 11. Columbia has now secured a Top 10 ranking in five of the last six seasons in which they have competed.
