NEW YORK — Senior Adrien Wheaton-Schopp scored in the game's opening 90 seconds but it wasn't enough for the Columbia men's soccer team. The Lions fell to Brown, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
 
Prior to the start of the match, the Lions honored their senior class of Wheaton-Schopp, Bryan Cosman, Ryan Kipness, Noah Hartzfeld and Andreas Zamanian. All five seniors were joined by their families and friends down on the field.
 
The Senior Day ceremony inspired an early goal from one of those seniors. Columbia earned a throw-in deep in Brown's half. Andrew Hilton II made a deep throw into the center of the box. The ball bounced off Alessandro Franciosa and came out toward the top of the area perfectly for Wheaton-Schopp, who volleyed a hard strike into the back of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
 
Brown (7-7-1, 2-4-0 Ivy) answered with a similar goal 17 minutes later. Levi Pillar took a throw deep in Columbia's half that was headed on by Greyson Mitchell. Mads Stistrup Petersen was perfectly placed in the center of the six and headed his shot home to level the scoreline.
 
Less than three minutes later, the Bears grabbed the lead. This time Stistrup Petersen gained control along the near side and sent a low bouncing cross through the top of the penalty area. It was kicked around and came out for Mitchell, who deked one defender, drove toward goal and slotted a shot into the bottom-left corner.
 
Columbia was presented with a great look at an equalizer in the 52nd minute. Noah Hartzfeld was taken down just outside the top corner of the box to draw a yellow card against the Bears. Luke Zielinski stepped up to take the free kick but Henrik Weiper leaped to bat the ball out from under the crossbar. It was one of his four saves in the half and six on the afternoon.
 
Brown capitalized in the 67th minute to double its lead. Lorenzo Amaral drove the ball into the top of the area and was fouled from behind by Ryan Yang. The referee whistled for a penalty kick. Amaral stepped up to take it and had the initial shot saved by Dean Kelliher but the rebound came right back to Amaral, who didn't miss the second time.
 
Columbia (1-11-1, 1-4-1 Ivy) ended the game even in shots, 10-10, and shots on goal, 6-6. The Bears held a slight 4-3 edge in corners.
 
The Lions conclude the regular season on Saturday at No. 21 Cornell (11-2-2, 4-2-0 Ivy). First kick from Berman Field in Ithaca, New York is scheduled for 4 p.m.
