Sokolowski scores first collegiate goal
ITHACA, N.Y. — The Columbia men's soccer team ended its 2024 campaign with a 4-1 loss to 16th-ranked Cornell on Saturday at Berman Field.
The bright spot for Columbia came from Cy Sokolowski in the game's 58th minute. Despite trailing by four goals, the Lions kept battling and managed to break through. Following an intercepted pass near midfield, the ball was played ahead up the far side for Joao Lima. With numbers on the counter, Lima quickly slipped a pass into the box for Sokolowski, who got behind his defenders and put a sliding shot into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the junior forward's collegiate career and snapped Cornell keeper Ryan Friedberg's streak of over 230 minutes without allowing a goal.
Cornell (12-2-2, 5-2-0 Ivy) was able to ride out the rest of the game without any further damage.
The Big Red opened the scoring in the 13th minute when a low cross skipping through the box made its way to Daniel Samways on the far side. Danny Lokko doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, whipping a shot low and across his body just inside the left post. Connor Miler, who assisted Lokko's goal, made it a 3-0 game in the 33rd minute.
Columbia's best opportunity of the half came from Will Case. The first-year stepped through a few defenders inside the top of the area and fired off a hard shot at goal. Unfortunately, it was right at Friedberg, who caught it for his first and only save of the game.
The conclusion of the game marked the end of Columbia's 2024 season. The Lions finish the campaign with a record of 1-12-1 overall and a 1-5-1 mark in Ivy League competition.
