Tai (+6), Zeng (+10) record their best collegiate performances
MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Columbia women's golf team wrapped up a solid performance at the Columbia Classic on Monday at Duran Golf Club. The Lions finished seventh in the 16-team field with a three-round total of 36-over-par 900.
Leading the way for the Lions was Yoko Tai. The sophomore native of Singapore posted her third consecutive round of 2-over-par 74 to complete her tournament at 6-over 222. She finished tied for 14th in the 90-player field to register the second top-20 of her collegiate career. Her 54-hole score was a collegiate best.
"I thought Yoko had a super solid performance. She continues to improve steadily," Columbia head coach Amy Weeks said. "In golf, you really want to see those small incremental improvements. She's done a lot of hard work over the semester to work on her tee shots, especially. She just needs to settle in and stay the course."
Columbia bested nine teams and finished just one shot back of sixth, and another shot back of fifth place. Monday's final round 11-over 299 was one of five team rounds under 300.
"Everybody contributed in different ways with their rounds. It shows that we are six players deep, which is nice," Weeks added. "It was also good to see Ava in the lineup as a freshman and get in the top 25."
Ava Zeng wrapped up the first spring tournament of the year with a final-round 74. The first-year from Windermere, Florida, which is a mere 65 miles from Duran Golf Club, finished tied for 25th at 10-over par.
Senior Allison Paik (75), sophomore Emma Shen (76) and junior Angela Zhang (81) rounded out Columbia's performers in the team competition on Monday. Shen (+12) and Zhang (+14) finished the tournament in the top 40.
"We had all eight players here and it was just really wonderful to have the whole team together on the road," Weeks went on to say. "There was some good golf here and there from everybody and I'm just really proud of all of them.
"I also want to take the time to thank Duran Golf Club for hosting this tournament. It's just a wonderful way to kick off our spring season and this is the third year we've been able to host it. A special thank you to Jeff Turner, the head pro at Duran, for his and his entire staff's hospitality. We are looking forward to planning another event back at Duran next season."
Columbia competes next March 10-12 at the Tulane Classic, which will be hosted at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
