Columbia sweeps Sunday’s doubleheader

NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team defeated Syracuse and Wagner as part of Sunday's doubleheader at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.

Columbia improves to 6-1 overall this season and has now won four consecutive matches.

Columbia lost two doubles matches in the match against Syracuse, but rebounded to win all three doubles matches against Wagner.

First-year Gayathri Krishnan registered a win in both matches. Krishnan fought back from a set down to take 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against Syracuse's Polina Kozyreva in the No. 3 singles. Krishnan followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gabrielle Perraudin in the top singles match against Wagner.

Julia Haynes, Anna Zhang, Fatima Keita and Salma Farhat earned wins in the match against Syracuse as the Lions posted wins in five of the six singles matches.

Sophia Strugnell and Rachele Rimondini picked up singles wins in the match against Wagner. The doubles teams of Zhang and Wang, Krishnan and Strugnell and Tewolde and Rimondini earned wins against Wagner. Winta Tewolde, Sophia Wang and Clarine Lerby also played singles, but their matches went unfinished after Columbia clinched the win.

The Lions are back in action next weekend at the ECAC Championships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first match will be played Friday, with another on Saturday and Sunday.
