Lions sweep recurve podium at regional competition
NEW YORK —Eunice Choi won a bronze medal on the national stage to highlight the Columbia archery team's performance at the 55th USA Archery Indoor Nationals. The Lions competed over the weekend at the Harrisonburg, Virginia regional site. The results were finalized this week.
Combining the results from the 15 regional sites, Choi finished third out of 117 archers in the Recurve Collegiate Women's Division. The first-year out of Chantilly, Virginia posted a combined score of 1,130 with her 120 arrows, averaging 9.417 per arrow. She was five points clear of fourth, two points behind silver medalist Laurel Anderson (Texas A&M) and six points behind gold medalist Riley Marx (Texas A&M).
"Eunice is a beast. She puts in the time, she comes in early to practice, does the extra work and does all of the little things to excel," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "This is not shocking, to me, that she had the outcome that she did. In fact, she could have certainly won gold based on her scores at practice, but I am still very proud and impressed with her performance at her first Indoor Nationals."
Choi is the first Lion to take a medal and Indoor Nationals since Sachiko Keane won gold in the Compound Collegiate Women's Division in 2022.
Two more Lions finished in the top 10 nationally. Junior Judith Gottlieb took fifth for her best finish at the event, scoring 1,121 points (9.342 per arrow). Sophomore Lillian Han was ninth at 1,100 even (9.167 per arrow).
Choi, Gottlieb and Han swept the podium at the Harrisonburg, Virginia regional competition.
"I'm very happy with where we are at this point in the season," Davis went on to say. "Judith has been putting in a lot of work to improve from her first year to now and it definitely showed with her performance. Again, I'm very pleased and looking forward to transition to the outdoor season."
Columbia now prepares for the start of the outdoor season. Its first competition takes place April 4-7 at the Arizona Cup in Phoenix.
