Choi, Gottlieb, Han, DeSousa named All-East
HARRISONBURG, Va. — First-year Eunice Choi won gold in women's recurve and sophomore Giselle DeSousa won gold in women's compound to highlight Columbia's performance at the USA Archery Collegiate Target Regionals this past weekend. The Lions won every medal they competed for, with Michelle Ahn taking silver in recurve and Judith Gottlieb taking the bronze.
"Just like last year, we won every medal we set out to get," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "I'm extremely proud of everyone who shot. I also want to point out that Giselle shot a 148 out of 150 in one of her elimination matches, which broke the Portuguese national record. Now, we are preparing for nationals and I feel good about our preparation to this point."
Eunice Choi, Michelle Ahn, Lillian Han and Judith Gottlieb qualified No. 1-4, respectively, in the qualification round. All four then made their way to the semifinals for an all-Columbia finish. Choi defeated Han, 6-4, in the first semifinal while Ahn defeated Gottlieb, 6-4, in the second semifinal, pitting Choi against Ahn in the final. In a tight final between two first-years, Choi came out on top, 6-4, for the gold. Gottlieb topped Han, 6-2, for the bronze.
In the compound, Giselle DeSousa qualified first with a score of 651, besting the No. 2 qualifying score by 23 points. In her first elimination match, she scored a 148 to break the Portuguese national record. She then shot a 141 in the semifinals to advance to the finals, where she defeated JMU's Lindsay Toothaker, 144-131.
The Lions also were represented in the mixed-team round. DeSousa won more gold, pairing with Columbia club archer Cooper Keane to capture the title.
In addition to their medals, all four Columbia archers were named to the 2024 All-East Team, which are determined by individual scores from USA Indoor Nationals and Collegiate Target Regionals. Eunice Choi, Judith Gottlieb and Lillian Han took All-East honors with the highest three combined scores in recurve, respectively. Giselle DeSousa had the highest combined score in the women's compound to earn her All-East honors.
Columbia will now prepare for the Gator Cup, May 10-12, down in Newberry, Florida. Collegiate Target Nationals follow shortly after, May 16-19, down in Statesboro, Georgia.
