NEW YORK — Columbia men's golf, women's golf, field hockey, and volleyball are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The women's golf team competes in its second tournament of the fall season this Friday-Sunday, taking on the field at the Lady Paladin Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina. The 13-team field includes Augusta, Ball State, Columbia, Daytona State, host Furman, Georgia State, High Point, UNC Wilmington, North Florida, Old Dominion, St. Thomas, Western Kentucky and Xavier. The Lions are expected to start Emily Luo, Sarah Shao, Emma Shen, Christine Chang and Yoko Tai. Furman University Golf Course will be playing at par 72, 6,262 yards. Columbia is coming off a good showing in its season opener at the Nittany Lion Invitational last weekend. Four Lions finished in the top 30 of the 83-player field, which included all three first-years.
MEN'S GOLF
After completing The Doc Gimmler on Tuesday, the men's golf team has a quick turnaround as it hits the road to compete in The Goat this Saturday and Sunday. The tournament, hosted by Navy, will be held at the Naval Academy Golf Course, which will play at par 71, 7,025 yards. The 15 teams in the field are Barry, Binghamton, Bucknell, Cal Baptist, Colgate, Columbia, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, Lafayette, Loyola Maryland, Maryland, host Navy, Pacific and William & Mary. The Lions are expected to have Grant Lester, Wyatt McGovern, George Rubelsky, Salil Khanduja and William Sung in their starting lineup. Darren Pang will also compete as an individual. Columbia took fourth at The Doc Gimmler, which was played at Bethpages's Red Course and Black Course. Lester led the way by finishing tied for second at even-par for the tournament. McGovern was in the top five at 1-over.
VOLLEYBALL
The Lions will play in their final tournament of the season this weekend, traveling to Florida to take part in the Jacksonville Invitational hosted by the Dolphins. Columbia will open things up on Friday morning against Bethune Cookman at 9 a.m. and then take on Jacksonville later that night at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, the Lions will close things out against the Citadel at noon. Columbia is fresh off a 1-2 performance at the Friar Classic, in which the Lions took down Stonehill but lost to St. Peter's and Providence. Julianna Williamson and Hailee Watts were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Watts smacking a career-high 18 kills in the win over the Skyhawks. Columbia will look to pick up win number three this weekend.
FIELD HOCKEY
The Lions (1-2) open Ivy League play at the Big Red on Friday before returning home Sunday for a meeting with Monmouth at 1 p.m. Columbia's comeback attempt fell short last Sunday to Bucknell at home. A 2-1 loss featured all three goals of the match coming in the third period. Down 2-0, Sophia Abate netted her first goal of the year by putting home a rebound to cut the Bison's lead in half. The Lions ran out of time in the final frame as they registered just two shots.
The Lions earned their first victory of the year and of the Niki Miller era with a thrilling 1-0 win in double overtime last Friday night against LIU. Columbia has now won four straight home openers. After nearly 77 minutes of scoreless play, Lindsey Yu cashed in off a penalty corner that was sent in from Delfina Gonzalez Lobo. It was Yu's first goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer totaled 14 saves in last weekend's matches, including 10 in Sunday's defeat to Bucknell. Her goals against average is 1.83 this season.
