Lindsey Yu scores her second game-winning goal of the year
ITHACA, N.Y. — Columbia field hockey defeated Cornell in its Ivy League opener, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Dodson Field.
Nearly six minutes into the match, Lindsey Yu found the back of the cage for her second game-winning goal of the season. Sophia Abate was credited with an assist after sending in a quick pass to Yu for the finish.
In head coach Niki Miller's conference debut, Columbia (2-2, 1-0) picked up its first Ivy League victory since Oct. 21, 2022 vs. Dartmouth.
"Ecstatic for the team opening conference play with a win against a talented Cornell side," Miller said. "The team was able to implement points of improvement that we focused on during this week's training and it paid off. Looking forward to welcoming Monmouth home on Sunday."
Goalkeeper Katie Wimmer shined with a nine-save performance and recorded her second shutout of the season. Wimmer kept four Cornell shots out of the cage in the final 15 minutes of play.
Columbia stood strong on defense and successfully defended 10 Cornell penalty corners, including four each in the first and fourth quarters.
Yu and Jacinta Solari Etcheberry each recorded a pair of shots on goal for the Lions. Columbia was outshot, 19-9 (9-4 on goal).
The Lions welcome Monmouth to Columbia Field Hockey Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m.
