Sophomore shooter from Long Island surges into the spotlight with three straight 25-point games
INDIANAPOLIS – The United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) has selected Columbia's Riley Weiss among its 50 standout women's college basketball players for the 2024-25 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Watch List. Members of the association's board of directors chose the players for consideration for the National Player of the Year. All Division I players remain eligible for the award.
The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner is to be announced at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, from April 4-6. The formal presentation of the trophy will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
The complete watch list can be viewed here.
Weiss, who picked up her second straight Ivy League Player of the Week selection earlier Monday, is averaging 18.0 points per game during her sophomore season. She ranks No. 3 in the NCAA in 3-pointers made per game (3.25), No. 9 in total threes (65) and top 10 in 3-point attempts (167). Weiss is shooting 38.9 percent from long range, which leads the Ivy League and ranks among the top 75 nationally.
A native of Hewlett, New York, just outside New York City, Weiss is one of just 10 mid-major players and one of just 14 true sophomores or freshmen to make the 50-player watch list. She has put together three straight 25-point performances. Her most impressive came this past Friday night on national television, when she scored a career-high 26, going 5-for-9 from downtown, to lead Columbia to a road win at Harvard, 80-71. Weiss has scored 20+ points in nine of Columbia's 20 games.
First-place Columbia (16-4, 7-0 Ivy) continues Ivy League play this Saturday at Brown. The game's opening tip is set for 2 p.m.
