NEW YORK - The Columbia lacrosse team resumes Ivy League play on Sunday, and will look to pick up its first conference win of the season over the Cornell Big Red. First draw is set for noon at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lions dropped a tightly contested non-conference game to the UConn Huskies, 10-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field.
Prior to this week, the Huskies had been ranked in the top 25 in the Division I Media Poll for five consecutive weeks. Columbia played a great all-around game, with high defensive effort all over the field and timely offense, allowing them to hang around with one of the top teams in the country.
Cecelia Messner led the way for the Lions' offense with her four points, three of them being goals.
Anna Becker added two points of her own, both on goals in the first quarter.
Ellie Taylor also had two points, with one goal and one assist.
On the defensive end, goalie
Simone Koryszewski started her third consecutive game and recorded her third straight performance with double-digit saves, matching her total of 10 saves against Villanova with 10 more saves against the Huskies.
Cordelia Flemming stuffed the stat sheet on defense, leading the team with five ground balls, causing three turnovers and adding four draw controls, both of which were tied for the team high in the contest.
Maddie Feldner tied Flemming for the team lead with three caused turnovers, and Taylor tied Flemming with four draw controls.
Julie Griswold added four ground balls of her own.
SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red enter Sunday's contest with a 6-2 record, with both losses coming to top-10 teams. Cornell most recently took on Binghamton, beating the Bearcats 20-9 at Schoellkopf Field. UConn most recently lost to #4 Yale 17-8 in Storrs. The big Red are 1-0 so far in the Ivy League, defeating Brown 16-14.
Last year, Cornell finished 7-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
In last year's matchup, the Big Red took down the Lions, 13-5, in Ithaca. Messner led Columbia with a hat trick. Falcone led the Lions with four draw controls and four ground balls on the afternoon.
Alison Surace had a team-high two caused turnovers.
Caitlin Slaminko leads Cornell with 28 goals on the season. Ella Wilmot has 34 points on 17 goals and 17 assists. Ellie Bergin is a force in the circle, leading the team with 40 draw controls.
