NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team completed the sweep over visiting Penn defeating the Quakers 10-1 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Softball Stadium.
Starter
Emmy Davis (4-2) went the distance, and the offense shined, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
Cami Neal drove in three more, giving her seven RBIs for the weekend.
Caylene Nguyen drove in two – including the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth.
Juju O'Brien smashed her first collegiate home run.
Penn (1-20, 0-6 IVY) scored the contest's opening run in the top of the first inning for the third consecutive game. A leadoff single by Megan Huang got the inning going, she moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a ground out from Jade Montgomery.
From there, Davis took over, pitching 5.0 complete, scattering three hits, a run, with two walks and a strikeout.
Columbia (9-9, 3-0 IVY) gave Davis more than enough run support, but piled it on offensively, scoring a run in every inning. The Lions took the lead back right away at the bottom of the first when Neal hit a home run down the right field line, her first of the year and 15th career home run.
The Lions scored a run in the second, third, and fourth innings and won the game thanks to a five-run fifth. The big hit was a walk-off single by Nguyen off a sharply hit ball up the middle to score
Payton Shimansky and
Caroline Palys.
The loss went to Penn starter Payton Bean (0-3) who went 2.0 complete, allowing four hits, and three runs, with a walk and a strike out.
