Senior hit .643 for the week and notched her 100th career base hit on Sunday
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia softball senior outfielder Eleni Katsivalis has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Katsivalis was instrumental in the Lions' 3-1 weekend at the MUSB Invitational hosted by Mercer and served as the table setter for the Lions' potent offense. The native of Yorba Linda, Calif., slashed .643/.768/.643 going 9-for-14 at the plate, with four runs scored and three driven in. She also swiped a pair of bags.
On Sunday, she hit .875, going 7-for-8 with three runs scored as the Lions defeated Presbyterian 6-3 and Tennessee State 5-2. Against the Blue Hose, Katsivalis went 5-for-5; the five base hits are believed to be a Columbia single-game record, and the first player from the Ivy League to record five hits in a game since Cornell's Meg Parker had five hits against Princeton on April 25, 2015.
She is one of just six players from NCAA Division I to hit safely five times in a game this season. The others being: Khloe Banks of Purdue, D'Auna Jennings from Duke, Paris Thompson from Alcorn State, Aly VanBrandt from Indiana, and Taliya Thomas from USC Upstate.
"I'm really happy for Eleni," head coach Jennier Teague said. "She was locked in all weekend and just had a great presence at the plate. I'm not sure I've seen a more focused stretch from her. It's great to see all the hard work paying off."
After her blistering weekend, Katsivalis is hitting .405. Her 17 hits this season are the third most in the Ivy League. She also ranks in the top-10 in the Ivy League in runs scored, doubles, total bases, walks, and stolen bases.
Columbia is off next weekend. They return to action on Friday, March 13, when they travel to the Lone Star state to participate in the Maverick Invitational hosted by UT Arlington. The Lions open the tournament, taking on South Dakota State at 1 p.m. before battling tournament host UT Arlington at 3:30 p.m.
