Lions take silver in team recurve, bronze in team compound
NEW YORK — Sophomore Eunice Choi won gold on the national stage to highlight the Columbia archery team's performance at the 56th USA Archery Indoor Nationals. The Lions competed at the Harrisonburg, Virginia regional site, Feb. 22-23. The national results were finalized late last week.
Combining the results from the 15 regional sites, Choi topped 145 archers in the Recurve Collegiate Women's Division. The sophomore out of Chantilly, Virginia posted a combined score of 1,160 with her 120 arrows, which was 30 points better than last year's performance that won her the bronze. She averaged 9.667 per arrow and was eight points clear of the field.
Choi is the first Lion to win gold at Indoor National since Sachiko Keane won in the Compound Collegiate Women's Division in 2022.
"Eunice continues to grow and captured the gold she just slightly missed out on last year," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "She will have a good bracket position for the finals next week in Vegas. All good stuff."
Choi earned one of the top eight scores amongst junior, collegiate and senior results combined. In doing so, she has qualified for the Recurve Women's Indoor Nationals Final, which takes place this week in Las Vegas.
Additionally, the Lions took the silver medal in team recurve and bronze in team compound.
"So many things to be happy about," Davis added. "Sydney is continuing her strong comeback. Giselle picking up where she left off last year. Alena had a season-high. Mia shot an indoor personal best. Michelle and Emily also improved over last year's scores."
Senior Judith Gottlieb took 11th in recurve, scoring 1,114 points (9.292 per arrow). First-year Alena Lipscomb (1,094) was 14th, junior Lillian Han (1,092) was 16th, sophomore Michelle Ahn (1,084) was 21st and first-year Mia Shin (1,073) rounded out five Lions in the top 25.
Choi and Gottlieb finished first and third, respectively, at the Harrisonburg, Virginia regional competition, helping the Lions take the team gold at the regional as well.
In the compound, junior Sydney Sullenberger took fifth out of 96 archers in the women's collegiate division. She combined for 1,158 points, averaging 9.650 with her 120 arrows. Giselle DeSousa (1,150), also a junior, was 13th nationally. First-year Briana Moore (1,139) finished in the top 25.
Columbia now prepares for The Vegas Shoot, which begins this Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nevada.
