NEW YORK — The Columbia men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with Penn on Sunday afternoon at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. The match served as the Ivy League opener for both teams.
Columbia (1-3-3, 0-0-1 Ivy) opened the scoring in the 13th minute on
Jack McDaid's third goal of the season. His brother,
Joe McDaid, created the opportunity with a long ball over the top from Columbia's own half. It found
Henning Myrvang in the box, who collected the ball and tapped it back into the open field.
Jack McDaid came rushing in and blasted his left-footed shot perfectly inside the left post.
The goal completely flipped the script after an opening 10 minutes that saw Penn (3-2-3, 0-0-1 Ivy) possess a lot of the ball in Columbia's half of the field. However, eight minutes later, the Quakers leveled. George Herbert sent a ball from near midfield over the top toward Patrick Cayelli. The Penn striker beat Columbia keeper
Dean Kelliher to the ball and chipped his shot over Kelliher to make it 1-1.
The Quakers came close to taking the lead on two separate occasions before the end of the half, as both Marco Bottene and Jack Wagoner hit the crossbar. Penn ultimately outshot Columbia, 10-5, in the first half. Only four of those combined 15 shots were on goal.
Penn would take the lead less than five minutes into the second half. This time, Wagoner would not be denied. Teammate Connor Dawson headed a shot from close range off the right post. The rebound came straight out to Wagoner, whose header did not miss and made it 2-1 Quakers.
The Lions got back into the game and evened things up in the 70th minute. First year
Connor Owen had possession of the ball outside the top-left corner of the box. He slid a pass low that
Andres Garcia let go through his legs.
Alessandro Franciosa was on the other side of it, collected the ball and fired off a rocket from outside the area that leveled things once again.
Columbia had a couple of looks for a late winner that did not pan out.
The Lions continue league play next Saturday when they visit Yale (0-6-2, 0-1-0 Ivy). Kickoff from Reese Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
