Lions hold on for NCAA-best 15th straight road win
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Perri Page pulled off another last-second game-winner, this time giving the Columbia women's basketball team a road win over Harvard, 58-55, Saturday afternoon at Lavietes Pavilion.
After dominating the first half, Columbia (10-5, 1-1 Ivy) extended its lead to 17 by scoring two quick buckets to start the second half. Harvard (8-7, 1-1 Ivy) then went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits. The Crimson extended that run to 26-7, using up much of the third quarter, to take their first lead of the game, 47-45. Riley Weiss hit a runner to tie it back up heading to the fourth quarter.
Four more lead changes took place over the final 10 minutes. Tied at 55, Marija Avlijas inbounded the ball from under the basket with 5.7 seconds left. Page caught it outside the paint, spun back toward the free throw line with a left-handed dribble and squeezed between three defenders on her drive. The senior's shot kissed off the glass and went through the cylinder as the officials called for a foul with 1.9 on the clock. Page connected on the free throw to make it a three-point lead.
"At the end of the game, I thought Perri really stepped up and made some big-girl plays," Columbia head coach Megan Griffith said. "That's exactly what you need from your senior leader."
Page ended the game with 24 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block. It matched her career-high in scoring from just last Saturday against Cornell and was her third double-double of the season.
"Honestly, I just had to be poised and consistent in what I'm doing, and just trust my training," said Page, who hit a game-winner with under a second remaining on December 9 at Seton Hall. "Just getting in the gym as much as I can, and then I have faith in what I can do.
"Harvard's very, very tough. We're going to see them again, obviously, and even in the [Ivy League] Tournament, I expect them to be there. Just to be able to tough this game out and grit it out, it means everything."
Also leading the way on the stat sheet was junior Fliss Henderson, who did a little bit of everything with eight points, nine rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals. She hit a timely 3-pointer with 1:52 left to put the Lions up 55-53.
For Harvard, Abigail Wright scored a team-high 20 points. Karlee White had 13 and Saniyah Glen-Bello had 12 to round out a trio in double figures.
The Lions used the 3-ball to score each of their first three buckets of the afternoon. Page banked in the first, followed by the second from Weiss and a third from Avlijas as Harvard called for time in a 9-0 hole. Columbia continued to dominate the first quarter, leading 14-2 and then 20-3 on a Hilke Feldrappe bucket at the 2:49 mark.
The Crimson ended the first quarter on a 7-1 run and pulled within nine on two occasions in the second quarter. Page, who scored 12 first-quarter points, pushed the lead back to double figures at the 1:43 mark. Feldrappe drained an open 3-pointer from the top of the arc to put the Lions up 13 at halftime.
Ultimately, the Lions hung on for their 15th straight road win, extending the country's longest active road winning streak.
Columbia plays its next three Ivy League games at home, beginning next Saturday against Yale at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live in the New York area on SportsNet New York (SNY).
