Weiss’s game-high 23 not enough for the Lions to overcome Quakers
PHILADELPHIA – Riley Weiss scored a game-high 23 points, including 18 in the second half, but the Columbia women's basketball team could not complete the Ivy League weekend sweep. The Lions fell to Penn, 64-55, Saturday night at the Palestra.
Columbia (14-6, 5-2 Ivy) came in on the high of defeating No. 19 Princeton less than 24 hours ago in New Jersey. Penn (13-7, 3-4 Ivy) came out with something to prove after falling to Cornell yesterday on their home floor. Ultimately, the Quakers prevailed, going ahead by six on a Saniah Caldwell three with 4:06 to go. They pushed the advantage to seven points at the two-minute mark, eight with under a minute to go and then iced it away at the free throw line.
The loss was Columbia's first in a true road game since Dec. 1, 2024, at Cameron Indoor Stadium against the then-No. 13 Blue Devils. It ends the nation's longest active such streak at 16.
The Quakers were led by Mataya Gayle's team-high 16 points and game-high seven assists. She was one of four to score in double figures, including a 10-point, 10-rebound performance from Tina Njike.
Weiss had seven rebounds and four steals to go with her 23-point night. Over the final 20 minutes, she was 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-7 from long range, trying to will the Lions over the finish line. Senior Perri Page had 10 points and five boards.
