Lions avenge loss from earlier this season behind another Weiss outburst
ITHACA, N.Y. – Riley Weiss hit nine threes on her way to a game-high 38 points and led the Columbia women's basketball team in a rout of Cornell, 80-55, Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena.
The sub-zero temperatures in upstate New York did little to cool off Weiss, who just got hotter and hotter as the game went on. The junior from Long Island hit seven consecutive three-point attempts between the midway point of the second quarter and the first three minutes of the fourth. She hit 1-of-2 at the foul line with 3:20 left to get to 38 points, and got off one final look from 3-point range to try and eclipse 40.
Columbia (15-6, 6-2 Ivy) avenged a loss from early January against the Big Red (8-13, 3-5 Ivy) and bounced back from a nine-point defeat last Saturday at Penn. Weiss was a big difference. After getting held to a season-worst five points the first time around, she scorched Cornell all afternoon long. Ultimately, the junior from Long Island went 13-of-20 from the field and 9-of-12 from deep. She tied Columbia's single-game record for most made threes, which she also matched two weeks ago in her 40-point performance against Dartmouth.
"My teammates were finding me and it just felt good," said Weiss, who added a career-high five assists with three rebounds and two steals in Saturday's performance. "Cornell started off in a zone and I was getting open … When it's falling, I look for my three-point shot more. When it's not falling, I try to score at other levels. Coach [Griffith] has really put an emphasis on me scoring at other levels when that shot isn't falling, because it hasn't always been in past games."
Sophomore Nasi Simmons scored 11 off the bench while senior co-captains Perri Page and Susie Rafiu scored 10 points apiece. Page, Rafiu and Fliss Henderson combined for 17 rebounds, which was more than Cornell had the entire day. Columbia outrebounded the Big Red, 33-14, outscored them 27-14 off turnovers, 15-6 in second-chance opportunities and 13-4 in transition.
"I think we did grow a lot in this game," Weiss added. "That creates momentum, getting contributions from multiple people and being able to find our flow a little bit offensively. This needed to be a statement game for us, but we still have a lot to work on."
Cornell was led by 13 points from Kelsey Langston. Rachel Kaus had 12 and Clarke Jackson had 10 to round out three in double figures. Meanwhile, Emily Pape, who had 19 the last time she faced the Lions, was held to just five points.
Columbia only trailed for all of 33 seconds before taking the lead for good at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter. Page scored six straight as the Lions imposed their will. Good passing and a mid-range turnaround from Weiss broke Cornell's zone in the early going. Weiss had 10 in the quarter but Cornell ended on a 9-2 run to get back within a single point.
The Lions held Cornell to just three points over the opening 6:30 of the second quarter. Weiss then hit two more threes in the final 90 seconds of the half to give the Lions a double-digit lead, 42-29. She had 19 at the break.
The treys kept falling early in the third as Weiss hit two straight and then assisted Mia Broom on the next. Cornell called for time down by 20, which would be the deficit heading to the fourth.
Columbia returns home to prepare for another back-to-back weekend against Princeton and Penn. Friday night's game against the 23rd-ranked Tigers will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
