Lions sweep the season series against Princeton for a second straight year
NEW YORK – Perri Page and Riley Weiss combined for 48 points as the Columbia women's basketball team toppled No. 24 Princeton, 70-56, on Friday evening from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
The Lions (16-6, 7-2 Ivy) completed a regular-season sweep against Princeton for the second year in a row. Columbia outscored Princeton (19-3, 7-2 Ivy) 45-25 in the second half to pull away with the big win.
Page scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds en route to her fourth double-double of the season. She was 9-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the charity stripe, also coming away with two steals, a block and an assist.
"It was just execution and finding my teammates," Page told Brooke Weisbrod and Joey Lindstrom in her postgame interview on ESPNU. "Understanding that we have a size advantage and just making sure that I'm taking my post touches – just taking advantage of my size and executing."
Fliss Henderson pulled down 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Weiss scored 20 of her 23 points in the second half. The junior from Long Island is now eighth on the all-time scoring list with 1,198 points.
After trailing by six at halftime, Weiss splashed back-to-back threes to kickstart a 10-0 run. Page complemented with consecutive baskets to give the Lions a 37-35 lead with 5:50 left in the third. Weiss went on to score 11 in the period, including the final five points to push Columbia's lead to 47-41.
The Lions then went on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 11 early in the fourth. Princeton never recovered. Weiss's fourth and final triple of the night with 2:46 to go gave the Lions their biggest lead at 16, which put the finishing touches on a huge win.
Columbia dominated the boards, 43-25, including the game-high 12 by Henderson and the 10 by Page. The Lions outscored Princeton 23-14 in second-chance points.
Fadima Tall led the Tigers with 16 points. Olivia Hutcherson added 12 and a team-high four rebounds.
An early 12-2 Princeton run gave the Tigers an eight-point cushion at the start. Columbia struggled on 4-of-15 shooting in the first quarter and turned the ball over six times.
Princeton survived a 5-of-15 shooting performance in the second quarter with its lead still intact. However, with 2:25 in the half, Columbia pushed back with a 7-0 run, cutting the margin to six, 31-25.
Columbia prepares for the second night of an Ivy League back-to-back, taking on Penn (14-8, 4-5 Ivy) at home on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
