Lions sweep Ivy weekend, hold tiebreaker for top seed
NEW YORK – Riley Weiss scored 21 points, Perri Page added 15, Susie Rafiu pulled down 10 rebounds, and it all added up to a victory for the Columbia women's basketball team, 69-56, over Penn on Saturday evening from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (17-6, 8-2 Ivy) remains atop the Ivy League standings. By virtue of their 2-0 head-to-head record against Princeton (8-2 Ivy), the Lions currently own the No. 1 seed for the 2026 Ivy League Tournament (March 13-14). Their magic number to clinch a berth to Ivy Madness in Ithaca is one.
"This game was definitely circled, but every game we try to treat the same," said sophomore Mia Broom, who hit four threes off the bench to score 12 points in Saturday's win. "Back-to-backs are super difficult, so after the Princeton win [last night], we were straight to the Penn scout. We were locked in."
Penn (14-9, 4-6 Ivy) didn't go away despite the Lions taking a 27-7 lead early in the second quarter. The Quakers, who upended the Lions just two short weeks ago in Philadelphia, pulled it back to 15 at halftime, then fell behind by as many as 21 in the third quarter, but kept fighting on. They chipped away before a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter suddenly made things uncomfortable, 54-46, with 4:51 remaining.
Weiss, who faced constant defensive pressure all game, hit a timely triple to push Columbia back in front by double figures. Broom assisted her on another basket two minutes later to keep it an 11-point game, and then Broom connected on her fourth and final triple of the night to make the lead a dozen with less than two minutes to go. That all but iced it away.
"Riley is amazing. She has a super high standard for herself," Broom added. "Her dropping 21 – she's frustrated right now. She doesn't feel like she played her best, but that could be someone else's best game of their life … We're trying to pick her up. She deals with a lot of pressure game in and game out. That's all I have to say, she's the best."
Weiss was 8-of-18 from the field and 3-for-9 from deep. The Ivy League's leading scorer added four rebounds, two steals and one assist, while the Quakers kept the pressure on and forced her into four turnovers. She wasn't perfect, but she didn't need to be. Her presence alone helped open up the floor for her teammates, including Broom, who hit 4-of-9 from downtown.
Adding to Columbia's night, senior co-captain Susie Rafiu had eight points to go with her 10 rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist. Fliss Henderson was also all over the stat sheet, tallying six points, nine rebounds, a career-high seven assists and career-high four steals.
Katie Collins, the 2024-25 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, led all scorers with 22 points, connecting on 5-of-7 from deep. Simone Sawyer had 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Abby Sharpe scored 10 off the bench.
Penn shot 50 percent (8-16) from 3-point range to Columbia's 28 percent (7-25), but the Lions were just too much everywhere else. They outrebounded the visitors by 10, outscored them 32-20 in the paint, 12-8 in second-chance points, and forced Penn into 23 turnovers that led to 24 points.
Columbia heads to Hanover, New Hampshire, next Saturday for a matchup at Dartmouth (10-13, 1-9 Ivy). Opening tip at Leede Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
