Ashley Kim’s Game-Winning Goal in Overtime Lifts Field Hockey Past UAlbany, 2-1

Kim’s fourth-career game-winner gave the Lions the victory in the home opener
NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey earned a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over UAlbany in the home opener on Friday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Complex.
Ashley Kim delivered the game-winning goal 3:01 into overtime, converting a feed from Norah Veldhuizen to give Columbia (2-1) the win. Kim flipped the ball in the air over UAlbany goalkeeper Ella Bowman that was initially sent in by Veldhuizen and delfected.
Jacinta Solari Etcheberry opened the scoring for Columbia 10:21 into the match, finding the back of the cage on a penalty stroke to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Columbia maintained its advantage through halftime, holding UAlbany without a shot in the opening quarter and limiting the Great Danes to two shots in the second quarter.
UAlbany (3-2) tied the game late in the third quarter when Pilar Lorenzini scored off assists from Jette Kurz and Mara Kuskes 12:25 into the frame.
Neither team could find the go-ahead goal during regulation, sending the contest to overtime tied at 1-1. Columbia controlled possession early in the extra period before Kim found the back of the cage to seal the victory.
Columbia goalkeeper Margot Houle made three saves in the win. The Lions outshot UAlbany, 9-4, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Columbia hosts LIU on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Broach Foundation Match.
