Jacinta Solari Etcheberry scored twice as the Lions rallied from two-goal deficit
The Lions (3-2, 0-1) fell behind 2-0 in the opening quarter before rallying to even the score in the third period. Cornell (2-4, 1-0) scored the deciding goal off the stick of Uma Kading early in the fourth quarter
Cornell struck first at the 5:08 mark when Kading converted a penalty corner, with Rease Coleman providing the assist. Stella Thibeault doubled the Big Red's advantage less than five minutes later, giving Cornell a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
Columbia answered in the third quarter. Solari Etcheberry opened the Lions' scoring with 11:11 left in third, firing home a direct shot off a penalty corner. Mckenzie Bloom and Morgan Dwyer assisted on the play.
Just under seven minutes later, Solari Etcheberry struck again to bring Columbia level at 2-2. Delfina Gonzalez Lobo and Dwyer set up the goal, which marked Solari Etcheberry's fifth of the season.
Cornell regained the lead early in the fourth when Kading scored her second goal of the afternoon, with Coleman and Julia Ramsey credited with assists.
Columbia continued to battle in the final period but could not find the equalizer. The Lions finished with six shots, putting four on goal, while Cornell recorded 15 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Margot Houle made seven saves for Columbia, including four in the fourth quarter, to keep the Lions within striking distance. Cornell goalkeeper Martha Broderick made two saves.
Columbia returns to New York City for a Youth Day matchup with Quinnipiac on Sunday at 1 p.m.
