Lions goalkeeper Margot Houle recorded four saves in the loss
BERKELEY, Calif. — Columbia field hockey was shutout by California on Sunday at Underhill Field, 4-0.
The Golden Bears (3-0) took 15 shots and put eight on goal. Lions goalkeeper Margot Houle tallied a pair of saves in the second and third quarter to total four on the day. Columbia moved to 1-1 on the year.
Columbia's first threat on goal came with 8:11 to go in the opening frame after Lizzie Adams had a shot turned away by Cal goalkeeper Carine Van Weichen. It was the Lions' lone shot on goal in the match.
Cal opened the scoring with 1:14 to play in the first quarter when Liz Klompmaker deflected Holly Pears' shot into the cage to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.
Klompmaker ripped a shot past Houle into the lower left corner of the cage to double Cal's lead with 10:12 left in the third quarter. Cal tacked on two more goals off penalty corners 40 seconds apart from each other late in the fourth period.
A final attempt to break Cal's shutout came in the closing seconds when Agustina Solari Etcheberry aimed for the bottom right corner but her shot was blocked away as time expired.
The Lions had two penalty corners on the afternoon compared to Cal's five. Columbia returns to New York City for its home opener on Friday vs. UAlbany at 3 p.m.
