NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sue Altman drained a three-pointer to tie the game with 4.2 seconds left and then hit a jumper as time expired to give Columbia a 59-57 win over Yale. The Lions finish the season 12-15 overall, 5-9 in the Ivy League.
Down by two with 12 seconds left in the game, Columbia fouled Stephanie Marciano, who made one of her two free throws. The Lions then took the ball down the court and found Altman, who drained a three to tie up the game with 4.2 seconds left. The Lions put on the press and caused a Yale turnover to regain possession. With 3.6 seconds remaining, Columbia in-bounded the ball and with no time left on the clock, Altman put in a basket to win the game 59-57.
In the first half of the game, the two teams traded baskets for a majority of the time. The Lions had a the biggest lead of the half, going ahead of the Bulldogs by seven points, 24-17, at the six minute mark. But the Bulldogs made a comeback and with one minute left in the half, tied up the game for the seventh time at 27. CU took the ball down the court and with four seconds left in the half, Susan Kern hit a three-pointer to send the Lions to the locker room up 30-27.
At the start of the second half, the Bulldogs evened up the score at 30. The teams traded baskets and then the Bulldogs went on a five-point surge, taking a 37-32 lead. After another set of traded baskets, Michele Gage cut the Yale lead by one point with a made free throw, 39-35. Adia Revell sank a mid-range jumper the next time CU had possession, bringing the Lions within two. The Lions then tied the game and then took the lead as Susan Kern hit a three-pointer and on the next possession, drove to the basket for a layup, making the score 47-45.
Yale took the lead back, however, scoring four unanswered points to make the score 49-47. The Bulldogs would continue their run, going up 56-49 with 1:43 left. Megan Griffith brought the lead back down to five points with two free throws and Sue Altman another free throw to make the score 56-52. With 25.7 seconds left in the game, Revell hit two free throws to bring the Lions within two points.
Kern led the Lions in scoring with 15 points, hitting three from behind the arc. Altman finished the game with 14 points, going six-of-nine from the floor while grabbing eight rebounds. Also scoring in double digits was Revell with 10 points and five rebounds.
