Columbia (1-1-2) finished with 14 shots and controlled much of the offensive pressure in the opening half, recording eight shots and seven corner kicks before the break. Goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney made four saves to earn her first victory of the season.
The Lions created chances early, with Sammie Moncion and Angie Cao each recording attempts in the opening 10 minutes. Columbia continued to apply pressure throughout the half and eventually broke through in the 41st minute.
Maya Nuwayhid put the Lions in front in impressive fashion, curling a corner kick directly into the net at the 40:50 mark to give Columbia a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked the first of Nuwayhid's collegiate career.
Columbia carried the one-goal lead into halftime and doubled its advantage in the 64th minute. Gabby Chan was initially credited with a close-range goal after dribbling through the defense and into the box, but La Salle challenged the decision looking for a potential handball. After video review, the officials' original ruling of no handball stood, but the goal was instead credited as a La Salle own goal. Regardless of the credit, Columbia took a 2-0 lead.
The Explorers cut the deficit in half in the 80th minute when Sienna Mount scored off assists from Katerina Loncar and Shiloh Moore, making it a 2-1 game with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Mahoney came up with the biggest sequence of the afternoon just minutes later. La Salle was awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but Mahoney denied Justyce Hollenbach's attempt. The ball remained in play and took an unusual bounce back toward goal, forcing Mahoney to quickly recover and dive for a second consecutive save to preserve Columbia's one-goal lead.
The Lions held off the Explorers over the final seven-plus minutes to secure their first victory of the season. The result also handed La Salle its first home loss since Sept. 20, 2025.
Columbia now heads west for a two-game California road trip. The Lions will open the trip against Saint Mary's on Thursday, Sept. 3, before traveling to Berkeley to face Cal on Sunday, Sept. 6.
