Lions earn strong result to open California trip
The Lions (1-1-3) held their ground against Saint Mary's (3-0-3), which entered the match unbeaten through its first five contests.
Neither side was able to break through in the opening 45 minutes. Saint Mary's generated three shots and five corner kicks in the first half, but Columbia's defense kept the Gaels off the board. Samantha Mahoney made her first save of the evening in the 27th minute, denying Brianna Jurasek to send the match into halftime scoreless.
Columbia came out with more attacking pressure after the break. Dema Elder registered the Lions' first shot in the 51st minute, forcing Saint Mary's goalkeeper Kate Plachy into a save. Gabby Chan followed with two attempts over the next six minutes as Columbia searched for the opening goal.
Saint Mary's responded with sustained pressure as the second half progressed, but Mahoney and the Lions' defense stood tall. One of the Gaels' best opportunities came in the 65th minute when Maddie Lucas struck the woodwork. Mahoney later denied Ashlyn Vaughn in the 80th minute to help preserve the clean sheet.
Mahoney finished with three saves to record her second shutout of the season, while Elder registered Columbia's lone shot on goal. The Lions' stout defense held RV Saint Mary's scoreless despite the Gaels finishing with 14 shots, including 11 in the second half.
