WHO IS A “PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE?”
A prospective student-athlete is any student who has started classes for the ninth grade. Before the ninth grade, you also become a prospective student-athlete if Columbia provides you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide to prospective students generally.
If you play men’s basketball, then you become a prospective student-athlete if you have started classes for the seventh grade.
You become a "recruited" prospective student-athlete at a particular college if any coach or representative of athletics’ interest solicits you or your family for the purpose of securing your enrollment and participation in intercollegiate athletics. Activities by coaches or representatives that trigger recruited status are:
• Paying some or all of your expenses during a visit to campus (known as an "official" visit);
• Arranging an in-person, off-campus encounter with you and/or your parent(s) or legal guardian; or
• Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with you, your family or guardian on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment.

WHAT IS “RECRUITING?”
Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s relative by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program.
NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER
All prospective student-athletes who wish to participate in NCAA Division I or II intercollegiate athletics need to be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center, formerly known as the NCAA Clearinghouse. This entity certifies the academic and amateur status of prospective student-athletes. Prospective student-athletes must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center prior to going on an official visit at any Division I institution. Transfer student-athletes who intend on enrolling in a Division I institution for the first time must also register with the NCAA Eligibility Center and have their amateur status certified. www.eligibilitycenter.org

COLUMBIA-BARNARD ATHLETICS CONSORTIUM
Under a unique agreement, women at Barnard College and the undergraduate division of Columbia University compete together as members of University-wide athletic teams. The arrangement, called a consortium, is the only one in NCAA Division I athletics. Established in 1983, the consortium was designed to coincide with the admission of women to Columbia College. It was built upon an already established women’s athletic program at Barnard College. The consortium provides the opportunity for women students enrolled at the separate colleges to compete within one athletics program while drawing on the resources of all the colleges. Through the continued development of the program, the University provides all undergraduate women with the finest competitive opportunities. If you are interested in attending Barnard College and plan to compete in intercollegiate athletics at Columbia, more information is available at this link: More on the Columbia-Barnard Consortium
