Javers scores first goal of the season in defeat
Cal (2-2-3) opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Reese Doherty gave the Golden Bears an early 1-0 advantage off an assist from Elhom Khursand. Cal controlled the majority of the chances in the opening half, but Samantha Mahoney made a pair of stops to keep Columbia within one heading into the break.
The Lions (1-2-3) responded with a strong second half and found the equalizer in the 65th minute. Gabby Chan set up Evelyn Javers, who scored her first goal of the season to even the match at 1-1.
Columbia continued to threaten down the stretch, with Krystal Medina putting an attempt on goal in the 87th minute. However, Cal broke the deadlock with just under two minutes remaining as Miriam Hils scored in the 89th minute to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 advantage. The Lions were unable to find another equalizer before the final whistle.
Columbia finished with three shots, putting all three on goal, while Cal recorded nine shots.
