Barton Nisonson
- Induction:
- 2018
- Class:
- 1962
Even not having been recruited for Fencing, Bart Nisonson ‘62CC ‘66PS is one of the most notable fencers in Columbia history. Despite not being a recruited member of the 1958-1959 team, Nisonson marked a 17-4 record during his freshman season. He continued to build on his momentum, noting a 23-7 overall junior record and a 14-1 Ivy League record for his senior season.
Nisonson capped off his 1962 season by being named first team All-Ivy, All-American, IFA and NCAA individual champion. Nisonson stood atop the podium at the NCAA Championships after a 24-5 fence off against Navy which was one of his most challenging opponents.
Nisonson continues to make an impact in the fencing community. He has served on the Fencing Advisory committee for the last 23 years, and served as its Chairman from 2007-2011.
His academic and professional accolades include induction into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society, and graduating Magna Cum Laude from Columbia. A graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Nisonson stayed close to sports during his medical career, serving as a team doctor and surgeon for both the New York Jets of the National Football League and New York Rangers of the National Hockey League for many years.
