Lions outshoot Hawks in 2-0 loss

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Columbia women's soccer generated plenty of opportunities Sunday afternoon, but a pair of early Monmouth goals proved too much to overcome in a 2-0 loss at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.

The Hakws (5-1-2) wasted little time getting on the board, as Brooke De Almeida scored just 45 seconds into the match off an assist from Evangeline Perdomo. Monmouth doubled its advantage in the 15th minute when Ashley Lavrich scored her fifth goal of the season, with Saar van der Boom providing the assist.

Columbia (1-4-3) responded by creating several opportunities over the remainder of the opening half. Lyla Geller forced Monmouth goalkeeper Tallulah Miller into a save in the 29th minute before Alexa Lee put another attempt on target in the 43rd. The Lions finished the half with seven shots but entered the break trailing 2-0.

The Lions increased the pressure after halftime, firing 12 shots while holding Monmouth to just three over the final 45 minutes. Sammie Moncion tested Miller in the 59th minute before Nicole Kim and Lee each put attempts on target as Columbia searched for a way back into the match.

Lee continued to create chances down the stretch, forcing two more saves in the 75th and 81st minutes. Columbia ultimately finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal, but Miller made seven saves to preserve the shutout for the Hawks.

Columbia returns to action next Sunday, September 20, with a trip to Delaware for its final non-conference match of the season.
