
Whiting's Game-Winner Lifts Columbia to 2-1 Win

After holding the ball in the Yale (11-3-1, 3-1-1 Ivy) zone right after the opening kickoff, Columbia broke through in the fifth minute on a long chip from 30 yards out from sophomore defender Cathleen Cimino (CC-Satellite Beach, Fla.), her first collegiate goal. The ball was chipped into the center and went over keeper Chloe Beizer's head and into the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Yale had a number of opportunities after the Lions scored, with Columbia keeper Allison Vespa (CC-Franklin Lakes, N.J.) making an assortment of saves, stopping shots hit directly at her and with leaping saves on balls headed toward the corner of the goal.

Later in the half, the Lions (9-5-1, 3-2 Ivy) had a great chance when Whiting made a series of spectacular moves and carried the ball deep into the Yale zone, sending a great ball down to Courtney Nasshorn (CC-Newtown, Pa.) on the right side, who fired a shot to the far post that was smothered by Susan Starr, who was in net for Yale in the second half. Yale then had a golden chance on another corner kick in the 74th minute. Howser headed a ball toward the net and it hit the crossbar, keeping the match even.
Just 43 seconds later, Lindsey Knowles (CC-McLean, Va.) knocked a through ball to Whiting on the right side, who slipped past a defender and fired a beatiful curving shot from more than 25 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the net, just over the oustretched hands of Starr, putting the Lions ahead 2-1 with just over 16 minutes left to play.
