ITHACA, N.Y. - Juniors Scott Waddell and John Mulhern scored consecutive goals within seven minutes of each other in the second half to lift Columbia to a 2-0 win over Cornell in the season finale for both teams.
The teams played an even first half, as the Lions tested Big Red keeper Steve Lesser with two shots on goal, while Columbia keeper Michael Testa (Manhasset Hills, N.Y.) only had to make one save in the first 45 minutes and it was a great one. Cornell's Tom Marks had an excellent scoring opportunity when he was set up for a shot from about 15 yards out. Testa made a diving save, keeping the ball from finding the right side of the net.
Testa stopped four more shots in the second half and the Lions' attack provided the rest. In the 52nd minute, Waddell (Beltsville, Md.) notched his first goal of the season after a scramble in front of the Cornell net. Waddell settled the ball and put it in the net for the go-ahead goal.
Mulhern (Smithtown, N.Y.) then struck in the 59th minute on a blast from 15 yards out on the right side to put Columbia ahead by two. The defense made it stand up and posted the shutout to close out the 2005 season on a winning note.
Columbia finishes the season with a 4-12-1 record and a 1-6 mark in the Ivy League.
