Army Slips Past Columbia, 2-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. - John Mulhern (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored his third goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1 in the 53rd minute, but Army's Pierre Hines put home what proved to be the game-winner in the 71st minute to hand Columbia a 2-1 defeat.

In a match that started an hour later than scheduled due to heavy traffic in the metropolitan area, Adrian Moreno got the Black Knights (1-4) off to a quick start, scoring in the 11th minute, converting on a sequence on a free kick.

After Columbia (2-3) had held strong throughout the first half and into the second, the Lions broke through against the Army defense. At the 52:44 mark, first-year Tom Smith (Brighton, England) found Mulhern for the junior's third goal in the last two matches. Smith also registered his first collegiate point on the goal.

Army responded at the 70:25 mark when Hines headed in a corner kick from Moreno that just passed the goal line and the outstretched arms of junior keeper Alex Maffeo (Morristown, N.J.). The tally was Hines' first goal of the season, lifting Army to the 2-1 victory.

Maffeo made four stops in net for Columbia in a hard-fought match which featured 37 total fouls.

The Lions will return to action in the Stony Brook Invitational beginning this Friday when Columbia will square off against Fairfield at 3 p.m.
