NEW YORK, N.Y. - With junior guard Megan Griffith the only Lion scoring in double digits with 14 points, Columbia lost to Ivy League foe Brown 62-39 in Levien Gym. With an early second half surge, the Bears were able to build up their first half lead out of reach for the Lions to win the game.
The two teams traded baskets to start the second half, but Brown went on a 22-3 scoring run to take a commanding 30-point lead, 56-26. Columbia cut the lead to 56-33, but the Bears were able to hold the Lions comeback effort short to win by a final score 62-39.
Along with her 14 points, Griffith had four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Also putting up good numbers was senior center Sarah Beato, who had eight points and six rebounds.
For the Bears, Sarah Hayes finished with a game-high 16 points and Colleen Kelly had 13 points.
The game started out slow with the Bears taking an early 16-9 lead halfway through the first half. Four consecutive points from Griffith cut the Brown lead to three (16-13) and after the two teams traded baskets, Hayes hit a basket to start a short five-point run to put Brown back on top 23-15. The Lions were able to get the game within four points with 2:26 left in the half, but Brown managed to score seven points before the buzzer to give the team a comfortable 32-21 lead to start the second half.
Griffith and Beato each had six points to lead the Lions and sophomore guard Michele Gage had five rebounds. For Brown, both Hayes and Kelly had nine points and Kelly had a team-high four rebounds.
The Lions travel to Penn and Princeton next weekend. Columbia faces the Quakers on Friday, February 17th and the Tigers on Saturday, February 18th. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
